Poppy John, her partner Stefan Holmes and their 15 month old daughter Petal at their flat in Langney showing some of the damp problems which they say the council will not repair. Print this A young family say they are at their wits end with damp and mould problems in their bug infested council flat and have accused authorities of ignoring their pleas for help. Poppy John, her partner Stefan Holmes, along with baby daughter Petal, say they have had nothing but problems since they exchanged their previous property for the flat in Hampshire Court, Etchingham Road in July 2013. The couple say as well as damp and mould problems, there are black bugs in the property. Independent experts have told them the problem is damp and not condensation, and they claim they have been ignored by Eastbourne Homes, which looks after borough council properties. Poppy said, “This awful on-going situation is causing myself and my partner constant unnecessary stress and we are now at our wit’s end. Your home should be a place of security, safety and comfort and we feel none of these things where we live. We are unable to decorate and our belongings, which we have worked hard for, are ruined because of the mould. “I feel as though we are no closer to any of the issues we have with our property being resolved and have absolutely no faith left in Eastbourne Homes. “We feel we have been lied to, we are constantly fobbed off, patronised and belittled. I’m beginning to wonder whether we are constantly pushed from pillar to post, with no straight answers and empty promises, in hope that we may give up and stop calling or even decide to leave our council property. “We are extremely concerned our daughter’s health will be affected by the damp and mould and are sickened by the fact we have bugs crawling around our flat. We feel as though we are stuck in this awful property. We are unable to bid for other properties as we have not lived here long enough and a mutual exchange is not an option given the poor state the property is in. Had we have been aware of the problems in this property in the first place we would have never agreed to the exchange. A spokesperson for Eastbourne Homes told the Herald, “We have been working with Miss John to resolve the various issues she has reported and will continue to do so. While we do not have any records of previous complaints from Miss John we have answered her first complaint and are now responding to other concerns she has subsequently raised. We have agreed a limited number of external repairs are required at the property, but due to the scale of the work we have a statutory duty to consult with neighbouring leaseholders who will have to meet a share of the final costs.
