US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has welcomed the Japanese government's move to change the interpretation of the Constitution so as to allow the country to exercise its right to collective self-defense. Hagel met Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the prime minister's official residence on Saturday shortly after his arrival in Tokyo. Abe said the security environment in the region has changed significantly and the importance of the Japan-US alliance is increasing. He said he welcomes the fact that the United States is upholding its stance of attaching importance to the Asian-Pacific region. He explained his government's effort to change the interpretation of the Constitution to allow the country to exercise its right to collective self-defense. The governments of Japan have traditionally maintained that Japan has such a right but that the Constitution does not allow it to exercise it. Hagel welcomed the Japanese move. He also noted that this is his 4th visit to the Asian-Pacific region in the past year. He said one of the reasons for the visit is to reassure US allies of the US commitment. Abe and Hagel agreed that their countries will continue to work together in the security and defense fields, including a review of the bilateral defense cooperation guideline. They agreed that US President Barack Obama's visit to Japan late this month would also help strengthen the alliance. Abe and Hagel discussed China's increased maritime activities and North Korea's nuclear and missile development. They also exchanged views about the situation in Ukrainian and confirmed that they will never tolerate any change to the status quo through the use of force. Hagel expressed his country's willingness to work further when Abe asked for US help to steadily reduce the burden on Okinawa communities hosting US military facilities. In particular, he explained Okinawa Governor Hirokazu Nakaima's request for the US to close the Marine Corps Futenma facility in Okinawa within 5 years. Apr.
